Haverfordwest Ringing again
Ringing has been suspended for several years at Haverfordwest whilst essential repairs were carried out on St Mary's. The job started as replacing the copper on the roof but as work progressed it became apparent that the support timbers were also rotten and unsafe. The ceiling and roof had to be supported by a scaffold, erected inside the church whilst the roof was completely rebuilt. The church was closed for about six months whilst the work took place. St Mary's has a fine wooden ceiling similar to that in the cathedral. The parish is having a service to celebrate the restoration of the church on Sunday 2nd April at 11am and the guild have been invited to ring for the service. Bishop Carl will be attending. Haverfordwest does not have a band at the moment and Lyn Harries who has done his best to keep the band going for many years has now retired from the tower. The bells are a bit of a challenge, an anti-clockwise eight, but were rung in December and are now available for those who wish to ring. The bells were rehung about 20 years ago by the local band and have new headstocks, bearings, wheels and pulleys. The ringing master is hoping to arrange a quarter peal for Sunday the 2nd and hopefully the guild will visit for a monthly practice soon.
Burry Port
Burry Port now have a ringing vicar! The bells need a small amount of work to make them ringable for Sunday services but the Church is looking to raise £20,000 to remove the existing crown stables and fully restore the ring.
